During halftime of PEC Zwolle’s game against Vitesse in the 11th round on December 5, an electronic billboard on the side of the pitch displayed an advertisement that read “SUSHI ROKU / TAKE AWAY & BEZORGING (Takeout & Delivery). In fact, this was an advertisement for the sushi take-out and delivery restaurant Sai van Wermeskerken planned to open in December (’20). In other words, this was the moment when it became public knowledge that the soccer player had become a sponsor of his own club.
He said, “We players get paid for our performance. But right now, all the teams are having financial difficulties because of Covid-19. So we, the players and the clubs, have to think about how we can support each other. I decided to give back in the form of sponsorship. It is rare for a soccer player to support his club as a sponsor, but I think this is one of the opportunities for us to realize this idea. Of course, as a sponsor, I have to manage the store well. Soccer is my chief priority. But I also want to broaden my horizons and be actively involved with people and society.
PEC Zwolle’s website and SNS introduced the collaboration campaign with SUSHIROKU. The campaign includes a lottery with prizes like “a year’s worth of Sushi Roku meal coupons,” “autographed uniforms,” “autographed game balls,” “autographed hoodies,” and “video messages from your favorite players.
